Valentine’s Day is one of the hardest holidays to ignore and for those in alcohol or drug addiction recovery the proverbial day of love can bring up a lot of mixed feelings. Instead of stressing out over what to wear, where to eat, and who with, give some good old self love a try. The relationship that you have with yourself is the most important, especially throughout your recovery. We hope these quotes help to remind you of that and inspire you to treat yourself with love and compassion this Valentine’s Day.
You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself and that person is not to be found anywhere. You yourself, as much as anybody else in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection. – Buddha
We couldn’t have said it better ourselves, Buddha.
Darling, don’t forget to fall in love with yourself first.
The relationship that you will get so much more out of, is the one you have with yourself. When you lead your days with the self love and respect you deserve, everything else will fall into place. And trust us, that kind of love is magnetic. Fall in love with the awesomeness that is you before you begin to search for someone who will do the same.
You demonstrate love by giving it unconditionally to yourself and as you do, you attract other into your life who are able to love you without conditions.
With any relationship, romantic or otherwise, surrounding yourself with people who will love you no matter what happens is the best practice. This is especially true for people who have struggled with drugs and alcohol abuse since it isn’t uncommon for them to have done some not so great stuff in their past to both themselves and others around them.
Make yourself a priority. At the end of the day, you are your longest commitment.
Along with your alcohol or drug addiction recovery, you are your longest commitment. Treat your whole self with love. Consider joining a substance addiction treatment program to connect with others who have gone through similar experiences and continue to support each other in their recovery journeys.
Talk to yourself like you would to someone you love.
This one is one of our favorites. It’s so easy for us to immediately jump to negative thoughts when we are thinking or talking about ourselves. After all we are our own worst critics. Pretend for one minute that you are talking to your best friend or someone that you care deeply for. You would probably never say half the things to them that you do to yourself. Give yourself a break and try being a little nicer every day.
